One of my favourites was number 15, which cited a 1955 forecast by the president of the Lewyt vacuum firm.
“Nuclear-powered vacuum cleaner will probably be a reality in a decade,” declared Alex Lewyt.
He had been incorrect.
Another doozy? In 1995, Robert Metcalfe, co-inventor of all Ethernet, predicted in that”the Internet will probably go supernova and in 1996 will catastrophically collapse.”
That ranked eighth.
But coming in first was the multitude of forecasts in 1997 and 1996 about technology giant Apple’s demise.
Microsoft’s former chief technology officer, Nathan Myhrvold, stated that it was”already dead”.
Wired declared that Apple was”out of the hardware game”. Along with the Economist snorted that Apple had two options:”The first is to split itself up, selling the hardware aspect. The second is to sell the business outright.”
1 research analyst quoted from the New York Times simply said Apple was”cooked”.
Together with the preceding paragraphs in your mind, I have made some predictions for 2019. It is something I like doing on New Year’s Day.
From time to time, I’m prescient, like when I predicted that John Horgan would eventually become B.C. premier in 2017 or the NPA would not control Vancouver council, park board, or college board after the 2018 election.
I, however, can also be spectacularly wrong. This was revealed when I figured that Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte will be assassinated. (In case you’re wondering, he’s still living.)
