Lewis Hamilton ‘unlucky’ in Italian GP pole position near-miss

Lewis Hamilton believes he had been”very unlucky” not to pip Charles Leclerc to Italian GP pole – but says he is enjoying the”exciting” duel using Ferrari at Monza.
Together with the last laps of Q3 destroyed by the farcical struggle to get a tow around F1’s fastest lap, the struggle for pole was finally settled by the first Q3 runs – that Leclerc gained from Mercedes’ Hamilton with a mere 0.036s and Valtteri Bottas by 0.047s.
But both Bottas and also Hamilton suppose rod might have been theirs had they not had to lift if KimI Raikkonen crashed in the Parabolica ahead of them. When it spun off, hamilton was directly supporting the Alfa Romeo.
“I had been really unfortunate,” Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. “I was only behind Kimi for the first lap. I started so I caught him the lap close. With a slower car you have to create a slightly bigger gap for your tow.

“I started catching him throughout the corners and I was thinking’don’t grab him too far’ and I got to the last corner and he spun, and so I had to lift. With that elevator I would have easily lost half an inch and it might have bene the difference between rod and instant.
Nonetheless, the championship leader said:”But that is exiting. I really like that it is that close and it is not multiple tenths.”
Leclerc vs Hamilton in comparison
In side-by-side SkyPad evaluation of Leclerc and also Hamilton’s laps, Anthony Davidson reveals how the Mercedes was fractionally ahead of Ferrari starting the backstraight that heads to the Parabolica – and then was level pegging leaving the last turn despite inevitably having to ease away for Raikkonen.
From the movie over, Sky F1’s Davidson says:”Raikkonen spins out ahead and Lewis certainly must back out of that ever so slightly.
“On the departure, despite a vehicle spinning facing him clearly needing to back out, the excess speed that the Mercedes essentially has beneath it if it goes via a high-speed corner is sufficient to keep him pretty level pegging with the Ferrari.
“Unfortunately for himonto that [pit] straight, only at the end that is what decided .”
Meanwhile, Leclerc said he had not been pleased with his own first Q3 attempt.
“Mercedes were quick, we were very quick too,” the Ferrari driver stated.
“My lap wasn’t special. I was way too near Hulkenberg about the timed lap. The slipstream was amazing, but at the corners I lost a lot. It was not ideal, I was far too close”
Hamilton and Bottas start between the two Ferraris on Sunday’s grid and the Englishman said:”I am really happy we improved the automobile bit by bit on the weekend and then also managed to get quite close to the Ferraris which is amazing.”
