Lewis Hamilton ‘unlucky’ in Italian GP pole position near-miss

Lewis Hamilton believes he had been”very unlucky” to not pip Charles Leclerc to GP pole – but says he is enjoying the”exciting” duel using Ferrari at Monza.
With the last laps of Q3 destroyed by the farcical struggle to get a tow around F1’s quickest lap, the struggle for rod was ultimately settled by the first Q3 runs – that Leclerc gained from Mercedes’ Hamilton by a mere 0.036s and Valtteri Bottas from 0.047s.
But Hamilton and also Bottas suspect rod might have been theirs had they never had to lift when KimI Raikkonen crashed ahead of them. Hamilton was behind the Alfa Romeo when it snapped off.
“I was very unfortunate,” Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. “I was behind Kimi for the first lap. I started so that I caught him the lap somewhat too near. With a marginally slower car you have to produce a gap for your tow.

“I began catching him through the corners and that I was thinking’do not catch him too much’ and I got to the last corner and he spun, so I had to lift. With that lift I’d have lost per week plus it might have bene the gap between rod and instant.
Nonetheless, the championship leader said:”But that is exiting. I love that it’s that close and it is not several tenths.”
Leclerc vs Hamilton compared
In side-by-side SkyPad analysis of Leclerc and Hamilton’s laps, Anthony Davidson shows how the Mercedes had been fractionally ahead of Ferrari beginning the backstraight that heads to the Parabolica – then was level pegging leaving the final turn despite inevitably having to ease away for Raikkonen.
From the video above, Sky F1’s Davidson says:”Raikkonen spins out in front and Lewis certainly has to back out of this ever so marginally.
“On the departure, even though a vehicle spinning facing him and clearly having to flip out, the excess speed that the Mercedes inherently has beneath it if it moves via a high-speed corner is sufficient to maintain him pretty substantially level pegging with the Ferrari.
“Unfortunately for him, onto this [pit] directly, only at the end that’s what made the difference”
Leclerc said he had not been happy.
“Mercedes were quick, we had been very fast too,” that the Ferrari driver stated.
“My lap wasn’t special. I was far too near Hulkenberg about the timed lap. At the corners I was losing a great deal, although the slipstream was excellent. It wasn’t perfect, but I was too close.”
Hamilton and Bottas start between both Ferraris on Sunday’s grid along with the Englishman said:”I am very happy we improved the car piece by bit over the weekend and then also was able to get very close to the Ferraris which is awesome.”
