Lewis Hamilton thinks that he had been”quite unlucky” to not pip Charles Leclerc to GP post – but says he’s enjoying the”exciting” duel using Ferrari in Monza.
Together with the final laps of Q3 destroyed by the farcical struggle to get a tow around F1’s quickest lap, the struggle for pole was ultimately settled by the very first Q3 runs – that Leclerc won from Mercedes’ Hamilton with a mere 0.036s and Valtteri Bottas from 0.047s.
But both Hamilton and Bottas suppose rod might have been theirs had they never had to lift if KimI Raikkonen crashed at the Parabolica ahead of them. When it snapped off hamilton was behind the Alfa Romeo.
“I was really unlucky,” Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. “I was just behind Kimi for my very first lap. I probably started so I caught him the lap a little too near. With a marginally slower car you need to produce a larger gap for the tow.

“I began catching him through the corners and that I was thinking’don’t grab him too far’ and I got to the last corner and he summoned, and so I had to lift. With that lift I’d have lost half an inch and it would have bene the difference between instant and rod.
Nevertheless, the championship leader said:”But that’s leaving. I really like that it’s that close and it’s not multiple tenths.”
Leclerc vs Hamilton compared
In side-by-side SkyPad evaluation of Leclerc and also Hamilton’s laps, Anthony Davidson reveals how the Mercedes was fractionally ahead of Ferrari starting the backstraight that heads to the Parabolica – then was level pegging exiting the last turn despite inevitably having to ease off for Raikkonen.
From the movie above, Sky F1’s Davidson says:”Raikkonen spins out ahead and Lewis surely has to back out of that ever so marginally.
“On the departure, even though a vehicle spinning facing him and clearly needing to back out, the excess speed the Mercedes essentially has beneath it when it goes via a high-speed corner is sufficient to keep him pretty substantially level pegging with the Ferrari.
“Unfortunately for him, onto this [pit] right, only at the end that is what made the difference.”
Leclerc said he hadn’t been happy.
“Mercedes were quick, we were very quick also,” that the Ferrari driver stated.
“My lap was not special. I was way too near Hulkenberg on the timed lap. The slipstream was clearly excellent, but in the corners I had been shedding a lot. It was not ideal, I was far too close”
Hamilton and Bottas begin between the two Ferraris on Sunday’s grid along with the Englishman said:”I am very happy we improved the auto by bit over the weekend and also was able to get quite close to the Ferraris that is great.”
