Contract discussions between the Chiefs and the defensive speech, Feb Rapoport have stalled, resulting in the holdout.
Jones skipped all of the voluntary parts of offseason workouts expecting to get a deal. Without one, he’ll bypass the mandatory portion too. Just like players under contract, Jones is subject to fines of $88,650 for lost mandatory minicamp, per the CBA. Fines are at the discretion of the team.
A 2016 second-round pick, Jones is set to earn just $1.2 million in base salary. As one of the best interior linemen in the NFL, he underpaid. The 24-year-old is coming from a 15.5-sack season for a game-wrecker on the inside. He has generated 24 sacks in his first 3 seasons.
With the Chiefs moving under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulolo into a 4-3 front, Jones may be an penetrating force in 2019. First, K.C. must settle his contract situation.
