The time had come. My bachelor’s degree ended up being newly in hand, and I decided to accept the job that is first had been offered ( it was the Great Recession and driving a car of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working together with senior high school seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to become a great fit for me! I learned many things working at a senior high school (did you know there’s an app that calculates the likelihood you will get yourself a snowfall day?!), and each fall was a training in how difficult it really is to become a 12th grader.
Senior year is tough! You’re in your hardest classes up to now, you are dealing with more responsibilities, you’re hitting a milestone almost every week…and then you are asked by us to college. 12th grade may never be simple, you can simply make it less hard. Though each student’s college procedure is unique, there are a small number of behaviors/mind sets that I have observed cause stress that is unnecessary and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Common Appocalypse (and by some I mean me personally), but they’re all avoidable knowing how exactly to recognize the signs!
Focusing too much on that which you can’t change.
Can you keep worrying about that C you’ve got in freshman English? Are you regretting your choice to give up the track team? Many students invest their senior fall concentrating on the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery pack. Rather than stressing about things you can’t change, take your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior year grades, and putting together the most readily useful application you can. Think upward and forward!
Ignoring the advice of your elders.
Would you nod as soon as your counselor speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it is your task? I am shocked…really, I’m. Keep in head that, with it,’ the adults in your life can offer important insight into your application process (and even help you identify your strengths so you can better highlight them) while they might not always be ‘hip and. Ignoring their advice can cut you off from some pretty information that is valuable so why not take most of the help you can get?
Dropping in love.
No, I’m not talking about the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for a long time (though you should really simply inform them already)! I am speaing frankly about the head-over-heels students that are feeling get for one university on their list. There’s a difference between having a first choice and being so fixated for a school you can’t even fathom going elsewhere. It is called the faculty process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it shall end! Though I sincerely hope you might be admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and find a number of institutions you’ll love to attend.
Avoidance.
Are you making things to the minute that is last? Have you been putting down finding out about what supplementary essays you’ll need to create? Are you reading this post on 14th january? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell yourself, no one works most readily useful under stress (trust me…this is a ‘do as I state, never as I do’ situation). Multiple drafts would be the key up to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the sole defense against a sloppy application. You’ve got enough in your dish year that is senior. If you don’t have an agenda yet for how you will finish all of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! That you do not wish to rush (or even worse, forget something) in this technique. So stop scanning this blog and get to work— you are known by me can do it!
Pupil Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo
Hey All,
It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to take effect with our blog. While picking out topic ideas, I considered common questions we get from potential students and one of my favorites is obviously: exactly what’s it want to be a student at USC? And even though I’m an alumna of the university and had personal great experiences…I really want you to know from current students with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about all the cool things I need certainly to say (many of you get an adequate amount of that), I’ll find current students to tell you about their experiences. The student Body President for the Undergraduate Student Government for our first installment, we have Edwin Saucedo. He is originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this May that is coming 2017. Here is what he’d to express:
Four years ago, I found myself where many of you may well be right now: frustrated with my personal statement and fed up with looking for the college that is perfect. It was hard enough attempting to navigate university applications when neither of my parents spoke English or had pursued advanced schooling themselves. The stress of finding the place that is best to invest the next four years was extremely overwhelming.
Than I could have ever expected as I think back at my college application process the first thing I have to say is, everything worked out better. I never thought I would end up at USC when I applied to college. I grew up in Southern Gate, CA where only 6% associated with the total population pursues a college degree. It’s understandable, We never imagined i might find myself being the pupil Body President my year that is senior right here. The four years in between my year that is senior of school and senior year of university have brought on a number of classes, experiences, and friendships I never expected. However, the combination of most these unexpected life outcomes has indeed led me to where I am today.
Being Student Body President at probably one of the most prestigious universities in the country is an job that is intimidating. It is not easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who result from over 100 different countries, are of all various races, and have extremely diverse economic backgrounds. However, its also a tremendously rewarding opportunity. Every time we get to go into our student government office and get myself: how do I make this university a better place for all pupils? That is our goal in student government, to create the most effective undergraduate experience, which is why I decided to run for this position spring that is last.
I spend at the least twenty hours every week listening to pupils’ experiences, asking them exactly how I could be of any service, and connecting them towards the appropriate channels on this campus. On one other part of things, I advocate on the behalf to administration in efforts to create better campus policies, address any issues, and plan for the future of our campus. My part that is favorite however shmoop essay writing company taking the details we learned from both students and administrators and discovering unique solutions to addressing these dilemmas.
In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and creative thinkers. We challenge each other’s ideas and gives suggestions on improvements. During the end of the day, we come up with proposals on what to address each and every issue. It is through these innovative proposals that we have been able to get our students uber that is free from 7pm to 2 am and have actually gotten a regular farmers market on campus. But our work does not end there. Over the length of the year our student government places on over 300 free events for our students. These cover anything from intimate talks about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or artists like Diplo for all of our students to enjoy.
We shape the undergraduate experience and give students the chance to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is what college is all about. Irrespective of whether you go to USC or select somewhere else as your brand-new house, dare to challenge your self and be challenged by others. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my very own, they’re not wrong or right but different, and that is okay.
As you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry as much about where you are going to find yourself, but rather that which you will do when you have there. College is a right time to explore and find your passion. I found my passion within student government and working towards enhancing USC for current and students that are future. For you, that passion might lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your final months of high school and get prepared to embark in a new journey complete of unique and exciting experiences. All the best on signing up to college and that we always Fight On if you ever get disillusioned, remember that what makes Trojans strong is!
