Cubs vs. Pirates MLB Pick – August 18th

It was terrifying at the 8th and 9th inning for the Chicago Cubs yesterday afternoon, but the bullpen finally got the job done to secure a 2-0 success. The night before, the Cubs managed to dismiss what seemed like a secure lead in the 9th. However, an identical fate wasn’t going to occur again for the Cubs. Tyler Chatwood and Rowan Wick combined to pitch three perfect innings, allowing no hits and no runs. The mistake was Tyler Chatwood.
Chatwood has evolved the Cubs have in their bullpen. Joe Maddon just has not been using him enough, often turning into his conventional relievers rather than Chatwood, that has mostly been employed as a rookie in his profession. Among the difficulties with not turning into Chatwood more frequently is the sum of work he gets from the bullpen.
If things are rolling, he is usually eclipsing 3 innings on the bulge, so that chooses him from the equation to get the following moment. Maddon has been careful to maintain his arm down the stretch for the most important period of their normal season. However, after blowing what should happen to be a certain win on Friday night, the Cubs needed to visit Chatwood to get some of their mojo back in the clubhouse.
Jon Lester should get some recognition in this area. Lester was going through conflicts, but appears to be back to the perfect track. The Cubs will need him down the stretch if they want to be playing in October. Lester was eloquent in 6 innings, having allowed just 4 hits and no runs. The Cubs will turn into Jose Quintana tonight, even although the Pirates will go with Mitch Keller on Sunday Night Baseball. Head below for our free Cubs vs. Pirates select.

Mitch Keller will probably soon be making only his fifth significant league start this day and it comes from primetime on Sunday Night Baseball. The beginner has become some valuable experience upward at the big leagues with the Pirates. It has been a choppy beginning to his profession, using a couple of horrible outings and a couple that went fairly well. His best effort came in his latest outing, since he had been eloquent with just 1 earned run enabled in 5 innings against the Angels at Anaheim.
In his additional positive outing, Keller surrendered 4 hits and 2 earned runs into the Tigers in the home. The Tigers have one of the worst crimes in baseball, and that could have only been a consequence of playing a poor team. Keller was abysmal against the Braves and Reds in his other two excursions, permitting 12 earned runs in 7 innings of work.
Luckily , he managed to bring his numbers down from the Tigers and the Angels, however, the damage was done. Keller heads into Sunday night by an ERA of both 7.94 and 2.00 WHIP. He’d find a huge rush of confidence if tonight proves to be a victory night in the workplace. I am not so sure he gets out of the one using a leading stat line, though. The Cubs slept yesterday afternoon and holding them down like that again is going to be tough to the Pirates.
The Pirates have a date. He’s been throwing extremely well recently. The Athletics and Phillies scored just two runs in total across 13 innings of play against Quintana. Quintana goes into this one with an astonishing 1.89 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in his previous three outings.
It’s also been five outings since he’s allowed over 3 runs at a start and 3 or less runs in seven of their past eight appearences. The Pirates are hitting on just .202 with 3 home runs strike from Quintana at 124 showings at the plate. The Cubs have had their own battles on the street in 2019, however, look for them to wrap this up road trip with a win on Sunday Night Baseball.
