Jones (24-1, 1 NC) is 18-1, 1 NC in the UFC and in the heads of many observers of the game is the best talent to ever step in the Octagon. Of course, problems outside the sport with all the law and with USADA have hindered his career, but he’s finally back on a constant fight schedule and that’s a good thing for everybody. Since his No Competition against Daniel Cormier in the summer of 2017, Jones has looked better than everbefore. He won back the vacant title with a brutal knockout win over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 after which defended the belt using a decision over Anthony Smith at UFC 232 just a couple weeks ago. Jones has assured the fans that he will fight more often now that his personal issues are taken care of, and also this bout with Santos will be his third fight in less than eight weeks.
Santos (21-6) is 13-5 overall in the UFC and is now riding a four-fight win streak, including three consecutive wins since moving up to light heavyweight. Since moving around 205lbs, Santos has knocked out Jimi Manuwa, Eryk Anders and Jan Blachowicz in devastating fashion. He is actually second all-time currently behind Vitor Belfort on among the UFC’s all-time best knockout artists. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back in Singapore for the second time in promotional history Saturday (June 17, 2017) with UFC Fight Night 111: Holm vs. Correia. It was an entertaining night of scraps that found half of 12 bouts ending inside the distance, and with that action now in our rear perspective, let us look at some possible matchups featuring a few of the competitors in the evening…
Bethe Correia vs. Liz Carmouche
Correia suffered a third-round knockout against Holly Holm this past weekend and will be seeking to return to the win column her next time out. I think that a matchup that makes sense for her next outing within the Octagon will be one against fellow former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger Liz Carmouche. It could be a rare”winner versus failure” matchup in the branch, but it is a pairing I think makes a lot of sense. I believe this prospective women’s 135-pound competition are a good match for the primary card to October’s UFC Fight Night in Brazil.
Colby Covington vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Covington and Dos Anjos were each successful in their own main card bouts at UFC Fight Night 111, with Covington taking a unanimous-decision triumph over Dong Hyun Kim and dos Anjos making a unanimous nod against former Strikeforce welterweight champion Tarec Saffiedine. It was a solid welterweight debut for dos Anjos, and that I think Covington would be a fantastic opponent for his next excursion, as both of them are looking to break into the Top 15 in 170 pounds. This welterweight competition would be a wonderful fit for the card to August’s UFC 215 in Seattle.
“Stun Gun” Dong Hyun Kim vs. Alan Jouban
This potential welterweight showdown has of creating fireworks that are great potential. It could also turn out to be a lackluster struggle if Kim uses a grappling-heavy game plan and finds success with it. I’m not sure he will though, as I could see Jouban keeping the fight standing. Jouban did show enhanced takedown defense in his last outing against Gunnar Nelson despite dropping via second-round guillotine-choke submission after being dropped with a punch to the forehead. Kim is coming off a unanimous-decision loss to Covington, also like Jouban, he will want to bounce back to the win column his second time out. I think this fight would be a good fit for the UFC Fight Night in Japan of September.

Justin Haley has won the rain-shortened Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway, his first at NASCAR’s top level.

Haley took the lead under warning – Kurt Busch surrendered the top spot when he pitted for new tires and was declared the winner after heavy rain followed two lightning flaws. There were 33 laps left when the 160-lap race was halted.

Haley was 27th when leader Austin Dillon triggered a 17-car crash which took out almost half the area and most of the top contenders. He passed a range of wrecked cars and then several more that left pit stops.

The 20-year-old Haley won’t lock in a place in the playoffs, however. He is a full-time driver at the second-tier Xfinity Series and has been making his third Cup Series beginning – for newcomer Spire Motorsports. The team’s No. 77 Chevrolet can procure a postseason bid, but only as long as it winds up in the top 30 in points.

Nonetheless, it was a fitting end for the closing July race at NASCAR’s most famous track.

The event, which was postponed a day because of rain, has been plagued with inclement weather and filled with unpredictable winners in the past couple of years. It is moving to late August in 2020 – the regular-season finale – as part of NASCAR’s major schedule shake-up.

William Byron finished second, followed by seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and Ty Dillon. Manufacturer Chevrolet won for the second successive week and took the top four spots.

Ryan Newman was fifth in a Ford.

Drivers Bubba Wallace and Daniel Hemric amused lovers during two lightning delays by throwing a football across the trail and into the stands.

Wallace and Hemric each had a couple of throws and even got booed a little.

But it surely gave fans a reason to stick around for at least an hour without any racing.

Lighting has halted the NASCAR race at Daytona International Speedway with Justin Haley at the lead.

The 20-year-old Haley is a part time motorist for newcomer Spire Motorsports. He finished second in Friday night’s second-tier Xfinity Series race while forcing for Kaulig Racing. That is his third Cup Series start.

Kurt Busch was leading the 400-mile race after a 17-car wreck. But Busch ducked onto pit road for fuel under warning. That left Haley front, and when the red flag was pulled because of a nearby lightning strike, it left Busch in 18th. As cars were parked and covered on pit road.

3 p.m.

With dark clouds looming and the close of the race in sight, leader Austin Dillon wrecked nearly half the area at Daytona International Speedway.

“The Big One” occurred on Lap 119 in Turn 1 and involved 17 cars – many of them in the front of the area.

Clint Bowyer was pushing Dillon into the front on the outside and made a tough move left to try and pass the leader. Dillon turned left No. 3 Chevrolet, branded Bowyer and then began spinning and taking out rivals.

“I guess he didn’t want me to pass him,” Bowyer said.

All four Joe Gibbs Racing cars – Deny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and defending race winner Erik Jones – were included. So were Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott.

“I was being aggressive and trying to keep the guide,” Dillon said.” That is exactly what you get.”

Kurt Busch managed to get through the melee unscathed.

Kyle Busch has a chance to win again this week and one needs look no farther than the odds to explain why.

The 33-year-old driver is a 2/1 favorite to win the Toyota Owners 400, which are the odds any driver has had to acquire a race yet this year.

It is for good reason. He’s not won a Cup-Series high three times this season, but he is coming off of a success and has six career wins at Richmond Raceway and has finished in the top 10 in six of the last seven races there. And oh yeah, he won both races there last year.

He will have competition that is great, although That is Busch’s race to lose. As good as Busch has been around, Joey Logano has quietly been solid with a win and several top 10s and Denny Hamlin has just two victories to choose a ton of high finishes, as well.

Those two drivers have combined to win five races at Richmond and also have a great opportunity to keep Busch from victory lane this past week.

We are going to take Logano to win his second race of this season and third career event at Richmond coming from a third-place finish a week in Bristol.

The Toyota Owners 400 could be viewed Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
